My nephew is in love with animals. Ever since he could walk around and probably talk, he has had an interest in different kinds of animals, and fish, and birds. He simply just loves them all. He’s like a zoo keeper or forest ranger in training. It is definitely funny to watch. My brother and I thought it would be a good idea to try to look for him a video game of some type that will continue on helping him learn about various types of animals. We figured at the least it could help him improve his cognitive development. Maybe in the future he would get to be the next Einstein or Ben Franklin or Thomas Jefferson. Great minds typically start off as curious ones is what we thought.
So throughout one of our numerous travels to my brother’s most loved video game store, we explored the racks for approximately 20 minutes. We probably looked really confused or 33, since it caused one of many store clerks to come over and find out if we wanted help. I told her yes and that we were trying to find video games that would educate kids about animals. The store clerk had a look on her face like she had never seen as well as heard of such a game. After spending 15 minutes talking with her co-workers and looking in her store’s database, she informed us they did not have this kind of game. She did let us know that a person shared with her there were farming games online that may work for our purpose but we would need to search for them. We thanked her for all her trouble and continued doing all our tasks for the day.
When I got home I hunted for farming games online to determine if there might be any which were suitable for my nephew. I was amazed to discover all sorts of online games which highlighted animals. In fact I came across one which I believed was suitable for a little child just like my nephew. It would allow him to learn about the different animals on the farm, virtually bring them up, and then make connections involving the varieties of products they produced. For example if he brought up chickens on his virtual farm, he'd discover they make eggs that are sold to supermarkets and then to families like ours.
Should he decide to raise cattle, he'd learn that cows generate milk that we use in our cereal or even ice cream. He may also learn all about sheep and how their wool is often used to make clothing. The learning possibilities were endless! I was so excited. I explained to my brother about it and then we immediately introduced the game to my nephew. He truly looks forward to actively playing it now and I’ve witnessed a vast improvement in his terminology as well as association skills. Whenever we visit the store now, and he sees a carton of milk, he says “moo” to let us know he is mindful it has come from a cow. It’s really sweet to watch a child become aware of the world around him. It's hilarious how a virtual game with animals made that possible.
